Effects of Plastic Surgery on Confidence

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, plastic surgery can improve self-esteem, and this boost in your personal self-image can have a very positive effect on your overall confidence and mental health. While plastic surgery is certainly not a mental health fix-all, feeling good in your own skin is an important part of mental and emotional health and plastic surgery can be a positive step in helping you get there. Some studies have identified patients who have even stopped taking anti-depressants following plastic surgery. While it is never a good idea to use plastic surgery to try to look like the model on the cover of a magazine, sometimes there are physical issues that impact self-confidence that are easily addressed.  For residents of Lubbock, plastic surgery may be a piece of your plan for working toward a life of self-confidence and personal harmony. If you think plastic surgery may be just what you need to boost your self-confidence and help you look and feel your best, make an appointment with Dr. Jane Rowley to discuss your options.
The Study
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons conducted a study on 362 patients. At the time of their surgeries, 61 of the patients (17%) were taking a prescribed antidepressant. Six months following the surgeries, only 42 were taking antidepressants--a decrease of 31%. The patients who had gone off medication stated that plastic surgery improved their self-esteem. American Society of Plastic Surgeons member and study author Bruce Freedman, MD, said, “Plastic surgery patients are taking a proactive approach in making themselves happier by improving something that has truly bothered them. While we are not saying that cosmetic plastic surgery alone is responsible for the drop in patients needing antidepressants, it surely is an important factor.”
